Upstairs, Downstairs

Upstairs Downstairs returns to BBC1 on 19 Feb at 9 pm

Here's a gathering of some of the articles on the second series of Upstairs Downstairs, which will begin airing on BBC One on 19 Feb (Sunday) at 9 pm

Daily Mail: "Racy upstairs, even racier downstairs: New faces, fresh scandal and lashings of romance... behind the scenes on the saucy new series"

‘They’re drifting apart,’ says Keeley Hawes, who plays Lady Agnes. ‘She becomes disillusioned with marriage, and boredom sets in. She also starts to mistrust him. It should be very sad, because they were the perfect couple, but every marriage has its ups and downs, and I think people will be able to relate to what’s going on.’

"In Real Life I'm Definitely Downstairs" Keeley Hawes in the Daily Mail (Feb 2012)

Two things strike you immediately about this lovely 35-year-old star. First, she’s a hell of a trouper – the majority of actresses would have cancelled. (‘But I really didn’t want to let everyone down,’ she says.) Second, despite the fine-boned beauty that earned her a contract as the face of No 7 cosmetics and the cut-glass accent that often sees her cast as aristocratic, top-drawer types, she is approachable, fun to be around and refreshingly down to earth.

Keeley goes on to talk about the second series of Upstairs Downstairs:

‘In this series, Agnes has a flirtation with a new character – an American businessman called Casper Landry [played by Michael Landes], and there are a few snogs involved there too! She’s encouraged in all this by another new character, Blanche [played by Alex Kingston], who is Hal’s rather modern aunt.‘Under Blanche’s influence, Agnes becomes far less buttoned up as a character. But then we’re in the year 1939, just before the Second World War, and in a sense everything is about to change, not just for the men who’ll go to war but for the women, too, and Agnes certainly reflects that.’

Keeley talks about family, the men in her life, including actor, Matthew Macfadyen and some of her favourite things.  Be sure to read the full article and photos on the Mail Online.

Keeley Hawes has not watched Downton Abbey

Keeley Hawes apparently told Stylist that she has never seen a full episode of Downton Abbey, despite being a star of the often compared Upstairs, Downstairs.  Keeley goes on to say:

"But I understand it's very good. I think because we each had two grande dames of British acting - we had Eileen [Atkins] and they have Maggie [Smith], it didn't help with how much we were compared."

"From the tiny amount of  Downton  I saw it was gorgeous, but as far as I can make out it has a very different feeling to Upstairs."
